The oboe is a very unique and interesting instrument. The mouthpiece is actually two small, thin reeds tied together with a little hole in between. When the player blows through the hole, the reeds vibrate together producing the sound we hear.
The player holds the instrument in front of them, gently resting the double-reed between their lips (no teeth allowed!) Blowing through the reeds creates a cool sound like a Snake Charmer!
The oboe is sometimes called a “colour” instrument because of the unique sound quality it adds to the Band. But it is also very important – so much so that the symphony orchestra actually sets their pitch (tunes) to the oboe!
