The Alto Sax is a versatile instrument that can be found in everything from jazz to rock-n-roll, to r&b and classical.
BUT it can also be one of the most obnoxious. Because of its shape (going from small to large) and because it’s made out of metal and you need to blow pretty hard to get a sound...it can be SUPER LOUD and drown everyone else out.
Of course, with diligent practice and some hard work, you can have fun playing this instrument.
Like with the clarinet, the player blows through the mouthpiece, vibrating a single reed to produce the sound. This sound is then amplified and shaped by the instrument and holes in the body are opened or closed to play different notes. Also like the clarinet, there are many members in the saxophone family; the alto is one of the smallest and highest sounding.
