100 Vancouver piano students had the chance of a lifetime, as they performed alongside legendary Steinway Artist Lang Lang and VSO Artistic Director Bramwell Tovey at the Orpheum Theatre this week.

The students doubled up to play on 50 Roland HP504 Digital Pianos with Lang Lang taking center stage on one of two 9 foot Steinway Concert Grand Pianos. This open Masterclass included a jaw-dropping performance of Schubert’s Marche Militaire and Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No. 5. The world-renowned pianist also took some time to share his insights and expertise on music making as well as his experiences as an artist.

This is the first time an event of this scale has ever taken place in Western Canada. The goal of 101 Pianists performances, which take place worldwide, is to inspire the next generation of music lovers by engaging 100 pianists in a unique social music event with Lang Lang.
